In 2023, we will celebrate the 235th anniversary of the death of George-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon.
Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist, philosopher, and writer.
An Academician of Sciences, he directed the Royal Garden of the Fifty Years, from 1739 until his death.
His Natural History, in 36 illustrated volumes, was a success from the outset.
The animal representations contained in the work have served as a source of inspiration for fine arts, fashion, decoration, educational works, and children's books.
This is evidenced by the Le Buffon lotto game: an illustrated lotto game, decorated with all species. The reproduced copy is held at the National Museum of Natural History.
