History of Vilac

VILAC, an exceptional brand since 1911

A jewel of French wooden toys, the company has stood out by cultivating a love for beauty. Dedicated to design in all its creations, VILAC works with talented illustrators, artists and designers to develop its games, toys and collectible objects.

Following in the footsteps of the traditional woodturning workshops that once made the Jura region famous, VILAC carries on this heritage: turned, smoothed, sanded, lacquered and decorated in our Jura workshop by skilled artisans. Beech, hornbeam, alder and boxwood from nearby French forests ensure both the quality and the authenticity of our craftsmanship.

Since 2011, VILAC’s expertise has been recognized with the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label (EPV), a unique governmental distinction celebrating French excellence for its Made in France production.

Beautiful Encounters

Our brand is renowned for the quality of its design and the creations imagined within our Artistic Workshop.
It is only natural that we have reached out to, or welcomed, artists who wished to join our adventure and bring their unique touch, each collaboration has always felt like an obvious choice.
Every partnership is unique, born of beautiful encounters.
It is a piece of history we share together, built around common values for over 110 years. Quality, unique know-how, noble materials, durability, creativity, and a love for beauty are just some of the ingredients we cultivate with these prestigious names and talented artists.
Decorated and enhanced by our artisans, our toys are also magnificent decorative objects that bring charm, authenticity and a touch of nature to your child’s room.

A Century of Expertise

Forever youthful, VILAC has journeyed through more than a century by adapting to economic and ecological challenges, while continuing to captivate new generations.
So many stories with passionate artisans who mastered their craft and passed it on. In fact, after more than 100 years, not much has changed and that’s quite reassuring. The gestures are almost the same, the sound of the machines, the wood being shaped and lacquered, all play the same melody. And above all, the scent of beech shavings still lingers, our very own "madeleine de Proust".

Meeting Today’s Ecological Challenges

Because today we cannot ignore the challenges posed by environmental issues, VILAC is committed to protecting our planet. Each small action is like a drop of water that helps form a river. That is why VILAC continues to act responsibly towards the environment.
Our wooden toys come from sustainably managed forests, respecting biodiversity. We prioritize short supply chains for our materials. We use local wood species and ensure that each tree cut is replanted. Since the creation of our Jura workshop, all wood shavings from our production have been compacted and reused to heat our premises. Rather than discarding items with minor defects, we donate them to the Toy Museum in Moirans-en-Montagne for creative workshops with children.

Less Plastic, Less Packaging!

Our wooden toys are inherently ecological. They are made entirely of wood with few exceptions: we add plastic or metal parts only when necessary for children’s safety. The same applies to packaging: we have removed all PET windows from our Made in France boxes and continue this approach across our entire collection.
For toys we manufacture abroad, when the required expertise is not available in France, we apply the same strict quality standards.
We are far from claiming to be perfect; there is still much to do. But we are constantly moving forward, seeking everyday solutions. After all, we only have one planet!
